Her childhood
Cynthia Yeh was born in Taiwan. At the age of four she went to her
older brother’s piano classes instead of staying with a babysitter, so
she has been studying piano since she was four. Thanks to this in third grade
she was accepted to one of four newly established elementary schools
with intensive music programs, where she had to learn a secondary instrument.
She chose the French horn, but by sixth grade she had braces and no longer
could play it. When she was ten her and her family moved to Vancouver, Canada,
and in high school she wanted to be part of the band. Her piano training made her
ideal for the xylophone. “For the first time in my life I could have fun and goof off,
because band music was so easy. Plus, we got to go on trips.”- Cynthia Yeh.

Her Schooling
Cynthia actually started her undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia (Canada) in Business/Commerce. Her second was in Piano Performance. It was not until her third year until she decided to switched her major to Percussion Performance.
She changed her major from business because "I had been studying piano since I was four years old, and I really missed playing piano when I got to college. I was still taking lessons, but it was difficult to balance with a business degree.”-Cynthia Yeh
Cynthia did play percussion in high school, so eventually she decided to take percussion ensemble because she thought it would be a “super easy credit.” Unlike high school percussion was not “super easy” in college.
I could not find a source that stated which year the next event came from, however I believe it was her second year of undergrad.
Megan Arns from Rhythm! Scene the newsletter of the PAS stated, "She began taking percussion lessons and practicing a lot, which concerned her piano teacher. She recalled him saying, 'Cynthia, you have to decide. You can’t have both!'" (p 5) Her first year she chose music over business and her second year she chose Percussion over piano.
Cynthia Yeh graduated The University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Music Performance degree.
